Old Exchange and Provost, 1865

For the upcoming 150th nationwide anniversary of the Civil War, the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon has put together a speaker’s series showcasing the work of a diverse group of scholars and authors. The lectures will be held in the Great Hall upstairs in the Old Exchange Building on East Bay Street in downtown Charleston.
A list of the speakers, topics and dates can be found on the following page. Tickets to the events are $10 for each lecture, or $50 for the entire 8 part series. ALL FUNDS RAISED from this event will go directly back to our support organization the Friends of the Old Exchange. We would be honored to have you be part of this educational exploration of our collective past!

Kristina Dunn Johnson is the curator of history at the Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum in Columbia, SC. She has also worked for the Historic Columbia Foundation and was a National Park Service Ranger at Gettysburg. She is also the author of the book “No Holier Spot of Ground: Confederate Monuments and Cemeteries of South Carolina” (History Press 2009).
Sharon McDonald is a former history Professor at Illinois State University. She was instrumental in getting a Congressional Medal of Honor application approved for a Andrew Jackson Smith, a African American soldier who fought during the Civil War. She has also published numerous history articles and essays, and is at work on a biography of Andrew Jackson Smith.
Tom Elmore has been studying the Civil War engagements in the midlands of South Carolina for several decades. His focus has been on the February 1865 burning of Columbia. His book on this topic “A Carnival of Destruction- The Burning of Columbia” will be published in 2011 by Joggling Board Press.
Dr. W. E. Emerson is the former Director of the South Carolina Historical Society and Charleston Library Society. He is currently serving as the Director for the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. He has authored many publications including the “Sons of Privilege- The Charleston Light Dragoons in the Civil War” (University of South Carolina Press, 2007), and is co-editor of the upcoming “Faith, Valor and Devotion- The Civil War Letters of William Porcher DuBose” (USC Press, 2010).
Richard Hatcher is the historian of Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Park sites. He is the author of “Wilson’s Creek: The Second Battle of the Civil War and the Men Who Fought It” (University of North Carolina Press, 2000).
Dr. Stephen Wise is the Director of the Parris Island Marine Corps Museum. He is the author of “Gate of Hell: Campaign for Charleston Harbor, 1863” (USC Press, 1994) and “Lifeline of the Confederacy- Blockade Running During the Civil War” (USC Press, 1991). Forthcoming is a companion book to the documentary film “American Iliad: The Siege of Charleston.”
Michael Coker worked for a decade as the Visual Materials Curator at the South Carolina Historical Society. He currently works part-time at the Old Exchange Building as a docent and as a special assistant to the Director. He co-authored “South Carolina- A Illustrated History” (Lammert Inc. 2005) and has authored “Charleston Curiosities- Stories of the Tragic, Heroic, and Bizarre” (History Press, 2008). His most recent work is “The Battle of Port Royal” (History Press, 2009).
Dr. Nicolas Butler is the former archivist at the South Carolina Historical Society. He now serves as the head of the Charleston Archive at the Charleston County Library and is a integral part of the Walled City Task Force. The University of South Carolina Press released his book “Votaries of Apollo: The St. Cecilia Society and the Patronage of Concert Music in Charleston, South Carolina, 1766-1820” (USC Press, 2007). Dr. Butler is hard at work on many future publications.
